The Truth About Time: Why Some Have More Than Others Pt. 1

One common denominator among anybody making good money in business online (or offline) is that it takes time.

From the gurus to the newbies, the amount of time it takes to become profitable with an online business is often overlooked, and underestimated.

Here’s the problem, we often connect time with money. You’ve all heard the saying “Time is money”. But we misunderstand that and are conditioned to trade time for money. This is an impoverished and “corporate-world” way of thinking. Instead I’d like to propose to you that “Money is a result”.  What you do with your time will yield a result that may or may not be worthy of monetary gain.

“Time is a medium used to achieve the desired results you are working for”

Here is where adding value to you comes into play. The more value you add to yourself, the more valuable your time becomes. For example, if I sought after and obtained wisdom on how to lose weight in less than 30 days; I then become valuable to the weight loss market. If I then take that wisdom and produced results, I put myself in a great position to get paid to reproduce the same results in lives of others. However, I never get there if I don’t first take the time to seek and gain the wisdom! Consequently, people see the results and the money that follows, but they rarely pay attention to the time sacrifice put in.

That is why successful people have different habits than broke folks. They know the value of their time so they are careful how they spend it. It is said that Oprah gets paid approx. $43,000/hour (that’s $732/minute!). So her spending a minute watching some crappy reality TV show is far more costly than most. So you see, it’s not until AFTER you have added value to your time that it becomes money.

“Time is NOT money. Value added time IS money!”

So how much time does it take to become successful in life? I once heard someone say that before you can expect any success in any field you need to put in at least 10,000 hours. Where can one find that amount of time?! You can’t “find” it you have to make it. Let me introduce you to clarity…

The shortest path of time from your current position to your desired results is a clear, straight path. The more clarity you have the less amount of time it will take to get your results. The more clear you are on what it takes to travel the path of success, the more confident you become. This is referred to as the “Clarity-Confidence Loop”. They both work in concert to propel you to the next level in life and in your business.

Coversely, there is a long, wrong path to your desired results. This path is an unclear, guess filled, hope-it-works, and uneducated one. This path is more frustrating, extremely exhausting, and less promising than a clear path. This is how some people can spend years on trying to figure out what took others months to do.

So your last question may be: “Where do I get this clarity from?” I’m glad you asked…

“You gotta pay the cost to be the boss”

The short, clear path is going to cost you a bit more than time. It’s going to cost you some money as well. This path requires that you buy the necessary tools, training, and information to keep you on the path. I’ve paid less money in online training products than I paid in one semester of college and the return has been far greater. I was willing to take the financial risk and purchase the necessary tools and trainings to get me to my desired results quicker.

Yes you can start for minimal to no cost at all. In fact, I recommend that for most people starting out. But if you want to shorten your learning curve and path to results, at some point you will need to spend some money. Remember, free information often moves you slower (and non-straight) to your desired results. Where the right, paid information can put you on an accelerated path to success.

I’ve often wondered, since we all start with approx 16 operating hours a day, how some people were able to get so much done. I found the answer to be successful people work with focus down a clear path to their goal. They are not distracted or easily thrown off course. They lock into what they want, what it takes to get it, and then execute. They don’t HAVE time they MAKE time for the things they need to accomplish.  The scripture sums it up the best in Ephesians 5:15-16:

“Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity,”

I have personally had to do this. Having a full-time, 9 hour/day job, married, 3 children, leadership at church, and starting my own business leaves little to no time to play. As I had to, you have to be willing to take advantage of every opportunity of free time you have. I’ve had to leverage the following situations for time to grow myself:

  • Lunch break at work
  • Waiting in line at grocery store
  • Time between clients
  • Early mornings when everyone is still sleep
  • Late nights while everyone is sleep
  • Waiting for appointments
  • Putting my baby to sleep (baby on chest and Macbook in lap. Rocking him to sleep and typing quietly)

So the secret to being able to get more done in less time is to be clear and focused with what you want and what it takes to obtain it. Millionaires have been known to get more done in one week than most people can accomplish in a year! You can increase your time efficiency as soon as you get serious about getting more out of life. We all start with the same 24, what do you plan to do with yours to get you closer to your desired lifestyle?

Lets talk about it in the comments…
